District Overview

Sub-district boundaries

The Hauser Lake Fire Protection District (HLFPD) is a taxing district within Kootenai County, Idaho. The District’s portion of property taxes fund emergency response to Hauser Lake residents and visitors. All funds stay in and support our community. The HLFPD includes the Hauser Lake Volunteer Fire Department: 41 volunteer firefighters, EMTs, first responders and support personnel and just 1.5 paid staff (a full time Fire Chief and a half-time admin). (Stats as of March 2024).

The HLFPD is divided into three political sub-districts, simply referred to by number 1, 2 or 3. The Fire District’s Board of Commissioners includes three elected officials, one from each of those three areas.

See the map posted on this page. The map is also available to view at the fire station. Sub-districts were last assessed in 2016 to achieve three areas with similar populations and geographic areas.

  • Sub-district 1 is the L-shaped area on the east which includes Ember’s.
  • Sub-district 2 is the block farthest south, along highway 53, which includes Curley’s.
  • Sub-district 3 includes the area to the north and west and the city of Hauser.

HLFPD Fire District Commissioners

Fire District Commissioners must live within their respective sub-district but are elected by Hauser Lake FPD voters district-wide.

The current HLFPD Board of Fire Commissioners includes:

  • Bruce Van Hoorn, eastern sub-district 1, began serving July 2023.
  • Marc Kalbaugh, southern sub-district 2, began serving March 2025.
  • Shane Kamps, northwest sub-district 3, began serving November 2019.

Be Involved!

The Board of Commissioners regularly meets monthly on the second Monday of each month, at the fire station at 6:30 pm (unless otherwise posted). Meeting notices and agendas are posted on the fire station door in advance of each meeting and on the District’s Facebook page at least five days before the meeting. Special meetings are posted at least 24 hours in advance, at minimum.

Members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend any and all fire district public meetings. Every meeting agenda sets aside time for public comment during which your input will be considered and appreciated.
